SPRINGFIELD (WICS/WRSP) — A 6-year old boy has been hospitalized for the past two weeks after catching fire. Springfield police said he and another child were playing with a lighter before the fire started.
After complications from surgeries he's now approved for a new procedure. Krysztian Grooms, 6, went from being on and off life support to the first in Illinois to receive a life-changing treatment.
"They told me that it was a $40,000 treatment and so I'm just kind of like okay this is just talk it's not going to happen," Krysztian's Mother, Rachel Wilson said.
The victim's family is turning tragedy into triumph.
"$40,000 treatment and they're actually doing it for free the first time," Wilson said.
Grooms will be the first person in Illinois to receive what's called a SkinTE procedure.
"He went into surgery to have a piece of his skin removed to be sent off to a lab that actually liquefies it," Wilson said.
The skin cells will be liquefied and spread across the burns that cover the boy's body.
Actually better than the grafting that is usually done in this case because the skin regenerates back to full thickness," Wilson said.
Because Krysztian is the state's first person to undergo the treatment, his mother said the family isn't being charged.
"I am tickled pink," Krysztian's Grandmother, Dina Perkinton said. "I'm just so happy I put it all over Facebook I want to shout to the world what's going on with him,"
Perkinton is also recovering. When Krysztian caught fire back in September, she bear hugged him until the flames were put out.
"My bandages are smaller now and the wounds are starting to heal they itch all the time now so you know it's healing," Perkinton said.
The road to recovery won't be easy, but family members remain hopeful.
"I'm really excited," Wilson said. "I can't wait to see how it all happens and to see how well he does,"
Family members said the surgery will take place this Tuesday. We'll continue to bring you updates on Krysztian's journey to recovery.
