121,965,000 on Government Health Insurance; 52.2% of Those With Incomes Under $75,000

(CNSNews.com) - There were 121,965,000 people enrolled in government health insurance programs in 2017, according to the Census Bureau’s annual report on health insurance coverage, which was released this week.

That is an increase of 13,678,000 since 2013, when there were 108,287,000 on government health insurance. (2013 was the last year before the Obamacare government health-insurance exchanges opened.)
The 121,965,000 on government health insurance in 2017 included 52.2 percent of individuals living in households with incomes under $75,000; 47.2 percent of individuals living in households with incomes under $100,000; and 37.7 percent of the entire national population.
“This report classifies health insurance coverage into three different groups: overall coverage, private coverage, and government coverage,” said the Census Bureau report.

“Private coverage includes health insurance provided through an employer or union and coverage purchased directly by an individual from an insurance company or through an exchange,” it said.
“Government coverage,” it said, “includes federal programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), individual state health plans, TRICARE, CHAMPVA (Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs), as well as care provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the military.
“Individuals are considÂered to be uninsured if they did not have health insurance coverage at any point during the calendar year,” the report said.
In 2017, the Census Bureau said, 91.2 percent of people in the country had some type of health insurance coverage during the year and 8.8 percent did not.
The report also noted that “people can be covered by more than one type of health insurance during the year.”
In 2017, 67.2 percent had some type of private plan during the year, and 37.7 percent had some type of government plan.
Table 1 in the report indicated that 62,492,000 people were on Medicaid in 2017; 55,623,000 were on Medicare; and 15,532,000 were in military health care plans.
Table 4 in the report indicated the type of health insurance people had broken down by their household income.
According to this table, there were 323,156,000 people in the United States in 2017. Of these, 46,682,000 lived in households with incomes of less than $25,000 and 68.4 percent of them—or 31,930,488—had government health insurance. Another 62,187,000 lived in households with incomes between $25,000 and $49,999. Of these, 53.0 percent—or 32,959,110—had government health insurance. Another 53,710,000 lived in households with incomes between $50,000 to $74,999. Of these 37.3 percent—or 20,033,830—had government health insurance.
In these three combined income brackets—which includes people in households with incomes ranging from less than $25,000 to $74,9999—there were 162,579,000 people, according to the Census Bureau. Of these 162,579,000 people in households with incomes of $74,999 or less, there were 84,923,428—or 52.23 percent—on government health insurance.
