Director of Bioinformatics

Bio-Reference Laboratories is the lab of choice for many in the Northeast. Serving the greater New York Metropolitan Area, the company offers routine clinical tests, including Pap smears, pregnancy tests, cholesterol checks, and blood cell counts. Through its GenPath business unit, it also performs more sophisticated "esoteric" testing in areas such cancer pathology and molecular diagnostics. It gets most of its orders (about 3.5 million per year) from doctors' offices, collecting specimens at about 50 patient centers scattered throughout its service area in New York and New Jersey. Our laboratory service in the New York Metro area is our core business, but it has expanded beyond those geographical boundaries through acquisitions, particularly in the area of specialty testing.
As a full service clinical laboratory, we are constantly looking for new technologies and new methodologies that will help us grow. People are our most important asset as we continue to grow and drive advances in technology.
BioReference is currently recruiting for a full-time Director of BioInformatics based out of its corporate headquarters in Elmwood Park, NJ to support the growing Genomics initiatives. The Genomics Program is a CAP/CLIA-certified diagnostics laboratory dedicated to providing clinically useful, cost effective and rapid testing solutions to advance the field of personalized medicine. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with experience leading software development and implementation teams to lead our ongoing efforts. The role will include close coordination and ongoing collaboration with divisional IT/Informatics teams and the clinical laboratory. Projects include laboratory information management system (LIMS) development and deployment, oversight of primary data processing in an HPC environment, data management and storage and developing new tools for genomic report writing. Positive attributes include excellent organizational skills, a strong interest in learning, the ability to multi-task, and an ability to manage multi-dimensional projects.
Responsibilities:
Provide leadership, mentorship and supervision to all members of the bioinformatics team. Provide vision and guidance on the future directions of the bioinformatics group. Participate in the design of the processes, and the implementation of data analysis improvements. Establish best-in-practice operations. Recruit and retain talented bioinformaticians. Introduce and implement advanced databases to enable clinical decision support, particularly those used in cancer.
Requirements
Qualifications
Ph.D. Computational biology, electrical/computer engineering, mathematics, physics, molecular biology, or equivalent.
Expert knowledge of the current methods in genomic bioinformatics.
Experience organizing and working with âBig Dataâ.
Knowledge of systems and computational biology.
