ACC scraps its flagship event in Chicago as Covid-19 fears spread faster than the virus
The American College of Cardiology has decided to cancel its huge annual flagship event, scheduled for Chicago in late March.
With coronavirus fears spreading faster than the virus, the Biogen outbreak after a meeting of only 175 people in late February has helped illustrate the potential dangers of even medium-sized events. This is the first time in 69 years that the event has been cancelled.
ACC President Richard Kovacs had this to say:
With an ever-increasing number of ACC members on the front lines of preparing and reacting to the Covid-19 outbreak, it is in the best interest of everyone to cancel the meeting and ensure our members are able to do what they do best – help and heal.
The people who manage the big events that mark every calendar year have had to engage in considerable soul searching in recent days. Some, like BIO-Europe Spring, decided to switch to an all-digital format, which has sparked considerable complaints from some who wanted a refund.
We still have to learn whether AACR — slated for late March as well — or ASCO at the end of May will be scrapped. But with a growing tally of major players telling office staff to work from home and stay off the road, the big question is whether anyone would come even if they decided to go ahead with their plans.
